Andrew Sandoval answers your Monkees questions!

Andrew Sandoval is the person who has compiled the Monkees rarities and reissues for Rhino Records. Here he answers questions submitted by members of the Monkees.Net Alert List.

Please update us on the whereabouts of the masters of the 1986 live recordings. Are there any other live

tracks from the '86 tour in the vault and will any of them see a CD re-release by Rhino now that David

Fishof is back in the fold?

These tracks are owned by David Fishof and The Monkees. They presumably have the tapes and will decide the fate and future of these tracks. As far as I know, Rhino has no plans with these tracks. I am unaware of any outtakes.

5.  Do you know the full set list for BOTH concerts held in Salt Lake City on 5/21/68?

No, I do not. They did at least perform the following songs at the filming: Circle Sky, You Just May Be The One, I Wanna Be Free, Sunny Girlfriend, Cuddly Toy, The Girl I Knew Somewhere, You Told Me, Mary Mary. They likely performed other, additional songs at both events.

9.        Do you know of any background info regarding the home video footage of the 5/68 Salt Lake City

concert used in the “Heart and Soul Videography” released by Rhino in 1988?  Do you know who

owns that footage and was it silent?

That is silent footage shot and owned by photographer Henry Diltz. The footage of the Monkees on the roller coaster is also from Salt Lake City at the famous Lagoon – where they performed after the filming.

11.     Is there still or were there ever plans to restructure the original Rhino CD reissues with MISSING LINKS tracks?

There was discussion of updating the first two to resemble the rest of the reissues. However, no further plans have been made for this and this has not been talked about for almost a year.

13.  Why does the mix of "All of Your Toys" on MISSING LINKS 1 crackle in the middle section? At 2:01

and 2:02 there are two hic-cups in the mix that were seemingly fixed in subsequent issues of the song.

There is severe tape damage on the multitrack and it is likely the tape was damaged at the time (early 67) because most of the copies have this problem. It is more pronounced on ML1 because that mix is unique to that package.

From Chris Coyle ():

1.        Did you create the stereo mix for "All of Your Toys" found on MUSIC BOX?

Yes. It was synched up from two four tracks to give us the stereo backing track and vocals. Also, it helped us get away from the tape damage present on most of the previous mixes.

2.        Is the mix of "Daddy's Song" found on MUSIC BOX original or a recent edit using various tapes?

It is both. It has original mixes newly edited together.

3.        How many of the new mixes on MUSIC BOX are original, and how many, if any, are newly created?

The following were remixed for the project: I Wanna Be Free (fast); All The King’s Horses; I Don’t Think You Know Me; Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow; The Kind Of Girl I Could Love; Do Not Ask For Love; Valleri; The Girl I Left Behind Me; Carlisle Wheeling; portions of Daddy’s Song; All Of Your Toys.

4.        Will the 1968 Budokan, Japan concert or the 5/68 Salt Lake City concert be released through Rhino Handmade?  What vocals on what songs DO exist for the 5/68 Salt Lake City concert?

The 1968 concert may be released at some point in the future – it is quite good. The setlist for the Salt Lake City concert tapes are above. I cannot say definitively which tracks are complete and useable.

5.        Did Mike produce "Daddy's Song," including Davy's vocal?

He certainly produced the backing track and most of the overdubs, I don’t know if he was present for Davy’s vocals. I guess Bert and Bob switched a few things around as far as who would sing what on the picture.

6.        Is the JUSTUS outtake of “Manchester Boy” a full band arrangement and is it finished?

I have never heard it, but I know it exists.

7.        Which Monkees are singing backing vocals on "I'm a Believer?"  It definitely sounds like Davy in the mix and there have been rumors that Peter is on it as well.

It’s definitely Davy – I don’t think Peter is on it.

8.        Is Micky singing harmonies on every released version of "Of You?"  Was Micky just part of the session in 1969 when Mike re-recorded his vocal for the song?  Does Peter play guitar on all released versions?

No, the information in the new box is incorrect. Micky was probably not part of the 1969 sessions. The version on the box is an original mix from 1966 – not a remix. Peter was at the session for the backing track of this song and was paid by the union. All the backing tracks are the same. So, yes he does play on all the released versions. However, I can’t really pick him out particularly.

9.        I have 2 solo Micky Dolenz recordings in my collection in which I have failed to put a date on or determine what project the two songs are from. They are titled “Chance of a Lifetime” and “Livin’ On Lies."  I was told they come from an acetate that was recently sold on eBay and that they are POOL IT! outtakes. They have a very late '80s feel and arrangement to them.  Do you know anything of these two titles and what project they could be from?

No.

FROM CORY SNYDER ():

1.        First, let me say how grateful I am towards you and Rhino Records for all you have done for the Monkees.  In your last Q & A, you mentioned the possibility of a special edition "HEAD" DVD - would that be an expanded version or one with outtakes and/or a commentary track?

A short video interview with all four Monkees has been located of them talking about the movie from late 1968. Also, it would be nice to have a commentary track. Nevertheless, I haven’t heard anything about this project in awhile.

2.    Are there plans to release "33 1/3", the Disney documentary, "Justus", the VH1 movie, or the

       Collector's boxset on DVD?

I’m not sure. I haven’t heard anything specific.

5.        Why has "Christmas Is My Time of Year" never been included on any rarities disc or boxset?

It’s owned by Chip Douglas and, although he is a very easy going and cool guy, Rhino prefers to put out compilations that feature only tracks they own. By doing this they can sell the same packages for any period of time without ever having to relicense the tracks.

6.        Did the Monkees record the 11/20/96 Billboard Live performance professionally? If so, any chance of a future release of a live DVD or CD?

Yes they did. I don’t know of any plans.

7.        Can you tell us if Davy played bass or keyboards on any songs during the 5/68 Salt Lake City show?

He played a bit of organ at least on Circle Sky. Peter played also played some organ and banjo.

8.        Any chance Rhino Handmade will release Mike's "Wichita Train Whistle Sings" album, the "David Jones" album from 1965, or Davy ‘s “Davy Jones” release on Bell?

The Colpix Davy Jones album is the most likely of those recordings since they own it. However, I know of no specific plans.

FROM Abigail Maddison ():

1.        Are there any plans to release mono mixes of the albums on compact disc?

It has been talked about many times, but there are no current plans. Also, a number of the original mono masters are still missing, which is the main hang up.

2.        Concerning the pilot episode, does the very first screen showing still exist or is it just the edited versions?

What’s on the video box is Bobby Hart’s 16mm print and that’s all that I know of existing on the original unaired version.

FROM GARY OWEN ():

1.        Have you heard the unreleased 1968 Nesmith tracks 'Music Of the World-A-Turnin' and 'Empire'?

What about the songs "Who Will Buy" & "Yours Until Tomorrow"?

Yours Until Tomorrow is a non-Monkees demo by another artist. Who Will Buy is apparently the Oliver song Davy is currently performing on tour. As for the first two, I believe I have only heard Empire and that is a backing track.

2.        Supposedly Dolenz & Jones performed as the Monkees on a low-key tour of smaller venues in 1970. Can you verify this?  Any of these shows recorded?

I cannot verify this rumour.

3.        I see in the HEADQUARTERS SESSIONS book that the unreleased track "I Didn't Know You Had It In You Sally" was eventually given a vocal from Micky Dolenz two years after it was recorded. Any chance of this popping up somewhere in the future?

Maybe, there is not a lot else left in the can!

4.        Have the CHANGES outtake tracks "Ride Baby Ride" & "Which Way (DoYou Want It?)" been found yet? If not, perhaps Jeff Barry may have copies lying about somewhere?

I have spoken to Jeff recently and they have not yet been located.

FROM JEFF GEHRINGER ():

Andrew- You mentioned in the liner notes of the Rhino "LISTEN TO THE BAND" box set that you are writing a day by day book on the Monkees' activities and studio sessions. How is the book coming, what will the title of it be, and when will it see release?

The book is coming along well, if very slowly. It will be called Daily Nightly and will feature their Day To Day activities up to and including 1970.

FROM DAN McKENZIE ():

1.   Does Micky or David contribute backing vocals to any of the CHANGES tracks? It sure sounds like

David on "I Love You Better."

I think it is Davy too, but I don’t know for sure. The multi-tracks are missing and there is no way of separating his (or their) performance.

2.   When did the Nilsson/Monkees demo recording of "Mr.Richland's Favorite Song" take place?

1968

3.        In the 1996 Goldmine Magazine interview you discussed having the Monkees lay down new vocal tracks onto a number of uncompleted backing tracks using only original equipment. Obviously the JUSTUS reunion disc scratched the plan, but what songs did you have in mind to complete? Were you able to actually discuss this with the band, and any chance that this still might come to pass someday?

I Wasn’t Born To Follow and All the Grey Haired Men were among the ones we discussed.

FROM JASON SNYDER () :

1.        I have read conflicting stories about how and why the studio version of "Circle Sky" appeared on the

HEAD soundtrack. What is your take on how that happened?

I think either Mike or Jack Nicholson preferred the studio take.

2.        Were any live performances from the 1968 Australian tour recorded or filmed?  Is there any film from

the Monkees' non-concert public appearances in Australia that might be released or made available in

       any way?

Press conference and airport footage does exist, but I am not aware of the concerts being taped or filmed. Maybe the press conference or arrival stuff will turn up on a DVD in the future?

3.        Is there any film footage from the television episodes that was never used? If so, is there any chance it

might be released commercially? How about extra, unused footage from HEAD? Is a DVD release of

HEAD or the TV episodes a possibility, with outtake footage and the like included?

Yes to everything except – no outtake footage from Head has ever been located. The only exception is the one trailer on the current Head DVD that features some snippets.

4.        Was any of the Monkees' first concert appearance, in Hawaii, filmed or recorded?

Not to my knowledge.

5.        Was there any audio or video footage made of Jimi Hendrix opening for the Monkees? Any

photos of him with the Monkees or on tour with them?

There are some photos, but no audio or video.

FROM Jeff McLAUGHLIN ():

The song "My Community" is said to be a Monkees song with Mike on vocals.  Do you have any more updated information on this?

I don’t think it’s Mike, and there is no evidence of the song in the tape library.

FROM REE ():

When Don Kirshner was fired from Columbia, he later boasted about his large settlement. Do you think he may have used some of that settlement in destroying the Monkees by undermining them? Did he buy off television executives to keep them off the air and other promoters to basically squeeze the Monkees out? Micky said it on E! that buy-offs were/are quite common in the music industry and other groups did that.

I highly doubt this theory.

FROM JOEL DION ()

1.        What is the possibility of a video collection being released featuring the Monkees' TV appearances, videos, press conferences, etc. that they did after the show went off the air?

Sounds like a great idea, but I don’t know of any plans. It may be a difficult thing to put together as all those appearances are owned by different companies.

Andrew, for those who didn't get a chance to read your previous Q & A's or your fantastic 1996 Goldmine Magazine interview, please tell us how you fell into all this Monkees stuff and give us some background on yourself being a Monkees fan.

I have been a Monkees fan since the mid-70s when my local television station, channel 11, began rebroadcasting the show. I wanted their records very badly but unfortunately they were out of print.  My father went to a second hand record store and tried to buy some LP’s  for me and saw a man try to trade a few in. The record store owner said that he wouldn’t buy any of them. My father followed the gentleman home and purchased the albums – thus begun my Monkees collection. In the mid-80s I met Bill Inglot and I was interested in doing a magazine article on his Monkees reissue work. A trip to the studio with Bill turned into a career when he got me the job to write liner notes for Missing Links 2. It’s been an interesting 12 years. I still love the Monkees records and I hope one day to find all of the missing Monkees masters.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND EFFORT.
